In an effort to engage students in small environmental initiatives that can make a big impact, Prince Andrew is about to embark on a challenge which will involve every member of our school community.
We are going to begin a WASTE FREE LUNCH/SNACK program!!!
We are asking all students and their families to really think about what they pack in their lunches. School lunches are a major source of waste in our community and the average student alone generates nearly 30 kilograms of waste per school year (that’s just one child!). Multiply that by the number of kids at our school and that amounts to a lot of garbage.
Recently, the EcoSchools Team conducted a waste and recycle audit. We collected the garbage and recycle from the entire school and examined and weighed the contents. Much of what was in the garbage was whole and partially eaten food; oranges, apples, bananas, muffins, yogurt and pudding cups (untouched!). Sandwiches in plastic baggies were just tossed in the garbage without even being opened! Not only is this unnecessary waste, it is EXPENSIVE!! You may think your child is eating their lunch but at times, it is going straight in the garbage!
What can we do? We are going to try to ensure that every child brings their food back home to you. Much of this food can be eaten later and you will get to know what your child is really eating at school.
To help you out, here are some LUNCH TIPS:
* Have your children pack their lunches with you so you know what they really do like to eat at lunch.
* Don’t sneak the food in and think that they will have no choice but to eat it.
* Only pack as much food as your child will eat.
* Use a reusable lunch bag/box for carrying a lunch.
* Use a refillable bottle for drinks – it’s cheaper and your child can save drinks for later. Use a thermos for cold drinks and hot soups.
* Put sandwiches, muffins, etc. in reusable containers instead of plastic bags. Label all containers so they have a better chance of coming home.
* Remind your child to bring home any food that they didn’t eat and praise them for remembering to do so.
Here are some healthy/eco-friendly lunch ideas:
* Slice up fruit (sprinkle the apples and pears with cinnamon – these taste great and they cover the “brown” spots)
* Cut up veggies and dip. So many kids love this and you can vary the veggies each day.
* Wrap lunch meat around cheese sticks (many kids do not eat the bread), try adding some crackers as well.
* Make your own “lunchables” with turkey kielbasa, cut up squares of cheese and a small treat. You can purchase the divided plastic containers with lids from many dollar stores.
* Hard-boiled eggs are packed with protein and Omega-3 (just peel them and place in a small container).
* Hummus with pita chips can easily go in reusable containers.
* Bagels with cream cheese (try the fruity ones too).
* Make your own rice krispie squares or granola bars (the internet has some great recipes.
* Add a hot dog and broccoli with macaroni and cheese (stays hot in a thermos).
To kick-off our new initiative, we are going to have a two-week, daily “check-in” on each classroom. The class that has the least amount of garbage each day will earn a ticket into a draw for a pizza lunch for the entire class! We will have two draws; one for JK – to Grade 4 and one for Grade 5 to Grade 8.
So, let’s go Prince Andrew families and show our environmental spirit and really do our part in minimizing our environmental footprint!
Remember at Prince Andrew, we are “Building a “Greener” School Community – One Child at a Time”.
